when I was developing Sink the Stink I investigated the surfactants
being used in the outdoor and scuba industry..and they were both
inexpensive and bio-degradable. On doing a little more research I
discovered that this whole family of surfactants used in "green"
soaps, detergents, etc were powerful estrogen mimics and while
chemically ok, they were a biological nightmare.

I used a much more expensive surfactant made from sugar, which didn't
have these properties, but most of the biodegradable soaps are a
problem.

I develeoped StS in 89 and I am amazed that the estogen issue is
only now coming to light. This family of chemicals (nonyephenols) is
also partially responsible of the lowering sperm counts in all
species and the feminization of marine fauna.
