what a great paddle saturday!! we had 4 folks plus myself for my first
paddle of the season. three people in OC1's and 2 SK's. the water was
_very_ low, 340cfs, in a river bed that holds as much as 30,000cfs.
so scraping bottom was a given, rather than a mistake!! the weather even
cooperated this weekend, giving us a glorious 50-60oF to paddle in.

within a couple hundred yards of the put in, is a great play spot, so we did,
and left when everyone had had enough. one swimmer, as one of the open boats
went from ferrying to swinging downstream. he self-rescued before any of us
could even get to him...

we paddled downstream hard enough to finish before the sunset ;-) this run is
10 miles long, and takes 3 1/2 hours at 300cfs. there is a 30 minute "playtime"
delay in that figure... the entire run drops 10 feet in 10 miles, 3 feet in
one spot, a small diversion dam. saturday it was open, so there were no play
waves at all. just ran under the huge metal gate. perhaps the biggest problem
with the paddle on this section of river, is the fact the play spot is 1/4 mile
from the put in, so then you're wiped out the next 9 3/4 miles!!

we saw two pairs of bald eagles, about a dozen hawks, and more mallards
than we cared to count!! no deer this time. i have seen herds down stream
from here...

another trip to the same location march 21st. i'll send another reminder
the week before. that will be a joint trip between the RMCC & RMSKC
