My first paddle purchase was a 250cm Werner little dipper, as it was the
longest one I could find in a local shop ;-) It's been a great paddle for
cruising in my Klepper double. Needing a spare I picked up a relatively
inexpensive ($90) two-piece 240cm "Bending Branches" wooden paddle with
urethane tips and a really nice graphite take down section. This has become my
favorite for outings in the Aleut as it's very light and just pleasant to use.
The light construction makes it more fragile than my other paddles so I don't
bring it where I expect to bang into a lot of rocks. For spending an afternoon
paddlng the wider sections of the Huron River it's perfect.

When I started taking friends out in my kayaks I realized I neded a third
paddle, so I picked up an 240cm AMT Expedition for around $90. I don't care for
it as much as the other two- it's heavier and seems to torque more than the
Little Dipper- but beginners find it enjoyable to use and it's a rugged spare.
It's certainly a lot better than the cheap $40 paddles with aluminum shafts.
