We discovered that the affect of the tides can be felt a long ways up a river. A couple of years ago, 30+ miles upstream from the mouth of the Columbia River (Oregon, USA), we were on a trip and almost lost our boats twice. We stopped a couple of times on different islands, and the tide was coming up. Each time we left the boats to wander around, and they were floating when we came back. They were high and dry when we left, and fifteen minutes later they weren't. On a previous post I mentioned our hellatious first day in the wind and rain. We were beat when we finally made it to the beach we were going to camp at. We landed down-beach from where the guides landed. We thought it would be easier to walk the kayak along the bank down to the others. Big mistake. We should have paddled the extra 5 minutes as it would have been much less work. It's not so much a saftey thing, more just an experience thing. The beach was not one that had waves crashing on it where it would could have been dangerous.
