I was just out today working on C & C rolls. I was wondering if
most use this type of roll or a sweep roll of if you have a
preference depending on conditions. What about hand rolling?

The first roll I learned, in a class taught by whitewater kayakers,
was the C-to-C, but I wasn't good at it then. When I switched to a
Greenland paddle, I taught myself a sweep roll, which is similar to
the standard roll used in Greenland. Now I can do a sweep roll,
screw roll, Pawlata, C-to-C (or short Pawlata), and sculling roll. Of
those, the sculling roll is probably easiest, and the sweep roll next
easiest, and the one I always fall back on when I have to roll
without thinking. The hand roll I have yet to learn. I think it is more
important to learn to roll equally well on both sides than to have a
large variety of rolls.
