BRAD WROTE: Ari, tell us about Finland. You must have lots of
fish there, or it wouldn't be called Finland.

 - Well, sorry Brad, I am not very familiar with the fishing scene:
tried quite a lot, though. I have had rod and reel with me during
some weekends last summer - but no luck.

The waters are basically unpolluted, even near Helsinki: you
can see people trying to get fish from the shores at the center...
Salmon, pike, perch, burbot and Baltic herring are the most common
species. In the lakes it is possible to find some real monsters of
pike.

I have heard that it is really nice to go to Lapland and try fishing
there, even if there are some danger of sicknesses of the salmon to
get here from the Norway. The salmon farming again...I am very
strongly opposed against it. Tthe negotations between the Finns and
Norwegians have not been very successfu,l I believe, bacause of the
pressure of the industry from the Norwegian side.

Mostly fishing is considered to be one of the common rights, so all
you have to do is to buy a licence from the nearest post-office. In
Lapland the regulations are little bit tighter: I think one is
supposed to have cleaned (?) fishing equipment and the licences are
only for a week or something like that.

Anyhow, the new laws passed 1997 left me enbarrassed, because there
are still some private waters, owned by local fishing communes, to
whom you are supposed to buy a private licence. So I decided to
become outlaw and quit buying any licences at all ;-)

Havenīt been caught yet. That might mean losing all my equipment.
