When I was in Kenya years ago they would not let us sleep under the
stars at  the lodge at Lake Nakura.  They said we had to beware of the
hippos.  They would often come out of the water at night.  If there was
not some soft body there last night, the hippos certainly would not
expect them that night.

 Also, the big "yawn" they do often is not that, it is a threat display.
They are aggressive creatures.  And BIG. I also have read of boating
deaths due to hippos.   Take them seriously.

Even the dangerous crocodile gives the hippo a wide berth.
I watched a documentary where it was shown that baby hippos had no
fear of crocodiles who had great respect for hippo mammas.
