>> It is the time of year when I renew my home and car insurance and thought to ask the question "are my kayaks insured?". What I found out was distressing but there was a solution. I have been carrying 2 kevlar kayaks and found that I was not really covered for damage or theft. I started worring about low bridges, rouge waves, shark attacks, falling trees and low-life kayak thieves. I was only partially covered by my homeowners and that policy would not even cover the loss of one of my boats. I am taking the liberty to let you all know what I learned. 1. Automobile insurance does not typically cover kayaks and accessories. 2. My homeowners policy has a $2000.00 limit for boats and accessoried. This is typical and some policies only have a $1000.00 limit. 3. I was able to get a separate boat owners policy through my carrier (Allstate) that would cover both boats for $2500 each plus $500 each for accessories (graphite paddle, pfd, spray skirt, sponsons?, etc.) This policy is relatively inexpensive...~$50/year for both boats. 4. If you are not a homeowner you can get a renters policy that will have some coverage for your boat and accessories. I am not an insurance agent (thank god!) so don't take above information as gospel. Call your agent! Protect your toys!!!!! Hal Wilton, NH >> ************************************************************************** * I had a different experience with State Farm auto insurance. Several years ago a garbage truck backed into my car while my lightweight fiberglass canoe was tied on top. The canoe was totaled, but State Farm's comprehensive insurance policy paid for a new one. On another occasion it paid for a briefcase that was stolen from my car. I advise everyone to check their policies, however.
