Just a couple of notes for info.

There was a piece of a thread a few days ago commenting --- as I
remember it --- on the non-availability of an approved inflatable
kayakers vest. A flyer from M&E Marine shows a Kent "Air-N-Float Vest
... USCG Approved Type III PFD" available for $59.95 US. Maybe it was
a Canadian issue --- can't remember. But it's a legal Type III south
of the border, anyway, according to the ad. Check with M&E if
     interested --- 800-541-6501 or <catalog_at_memarine.com>; they're in New
     Jersey and Delaware.

And, in reviewing the Defender Marine catalog, there is a new Apelco
520 VHF that is waterproof <and> submersible --- compliant with JIS-7
requiring survival at a depth of one meter for 30 minutes --- which
sounds pretty impressive. (Note: the newer handheld VHFs have a
"weather alert" feature which automatically indicates a severe weather
broadcast in your area, a definite advantage if you're within the NOAA
     radio network.)
