Tim, I've seen two types of paddle teathers. One is a long elastic cord that attaches between the paddle and the kayak and the other is a short elastic cord that attaches between the paddle and your wrist. I gather (but I don't know for sure) that the long cord between the boat and the paddle is mostly a whitewater thing. However I made such a device for myself I didn't like it. But I modified it such that I attach it to the paddle with velcro. I only use it when fishing in calm water. The reason I didn't like the long cord was that it is allways in the way and I got tangled in it during roll practice. (I always carry a small lock blade knife now as well) When I use a paddle leash now it's the short one to my wrist. Any way you should carry a spare paddle with you. I know a spare two piece paddle could be expensive however if you are in calm water or close to shore an inexpensive paddle from a discount store is better than nothing. I'm sure that the members of the list would agree that if your doing anything more that calm, sheltered water, close to shore your spare paddle should be something you can paddle with for the remainder of your trip. I noticed that many of the accidents turned desparate when the kayak and/or paddle floated away from the paddler. This was especially the case when a solo paddler got into trouble. Most of my paddling is done solo, so I want to figure out how to correctly tether myself to my paddle and my boat. The trick is to setup the tethering so I won't notice it under normal conditions (i.e. it has to be comfortable and out of the way) and so I can untether rapidly should saftey require me to do so. What do the seasoned paddlers on this mail-list do about tethering? I've never actually seen anyone do it. --Tim *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.gasp-seakayak.net/paddlewise/ *************************************************************************** *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.gasp-seakayak.net/paddlewise/ ***************************************************************************Received on Tue Mar 24 1998 - 10:14:11 PST
