I am with the camp that tethers to the boat. As to the type, I use a paddle leash mounted to the deck made of a polyurethane coil with a brass swivel. The coil is like a phone cord and is easily stretched but sits right in front of you on the skirt under normal circumstances. The brass swivel keeps it from bunching and twisting. $18 from Primex of CA. 800 422 2482. I have tried several others and highly recommend this. They also have a web site www.deluge.com.
