Hi Tim, Carrying a readily accessible second paddle is the way to go, it is a lot safer and you do not have to deal with any ropes nor wires when you need to do a wet exit. I suggest that you make a greenland storm paddle and keep it on your foredeck, as you in my kayak that day. I can make one for you if the project seems to hard. Before I had my storm paddle I used to carry a canoe paddle on my foredeck. Since it has a bigger blade paddling fast and rolling was not a problem.
