These days I'm essentially a sea kayaker, but I started off paddling whitewater in an OC-1. I always carry a Gerber River Shorty on my PFD - it lives there, always available, but hopefully not needed (like most safety equipment). I started off carrying it on the lash tab on the shoulder strap of my PFD, but it bothered me there so I moved it to one of the straps on the side, down underneath my arm. It doesn't interfere at all with my paddling stroke (this could depend a lot on your PFD) and most people don't even notice that it's there (thus avoiding the whole "Rambo" thing)<g>. I consider the knife to be an essential part of my emergency/survival gear - "if you're not wearing it, you don't have it". The protected blade devices that Joq and others have mentioned sound perfect for the purpose of "dis-entanglement", but I'd still want to have a "regular" knife for use on shore in an emergency (not for protection - the bears up here just haven't developed much fear of shiny 3.5 inch blades wielded at them<g>) The truth is that this knife usually doesn't do much other than slice cheese or spread peanut butter but why carry two knives?
