I'll probably post a modified version of the invite to rec.boats.paddle ---------- THE FIFTH ANNUAL NORTHEAST TRIBAL SKIN BOAT GATHERING June 12, 13, & 14 1998 West Dennis, Mass (Cape Cod). This annual Gathering is for all owners, builders and people interested in handbuilt traditional or traditionally inspired manually powered watercraft. Early arrivals on the afternoon of the 12th. Main events on the 13th & 14th. This is a non-commercial gathering of interested people but manufacturers of kits and boats are welcome to attend. There will be a number of hand built boats on display and an opportunity to talk with builders, and with their permission, try out different types of boats. Events will include: Boat display & tryout Building tips Workshops Scheduled kayak trips Local paddle trips Races General discussions about skin boats Events for family members CAPE COD June is a wonderful time for the Cape. Before the crowds and after everything opens. The prices are better and lodging available. There are unlimited activities for the family and the kids, good restaurants and a variety of accommodations all close to the Gathering site. We do emphasize that if you want lodging accommodations, that you must reserve it on your own. CAMPSITES There are campsites available on the Cape. A large camping area is available at Nickerson State Park. Other private camping areas are available. Check with the Chamber of Commerce. We do emphasize that if you want your own campsite, that you must reserve it on your own. WEATHER AND PADDLING CONDITIONS If the El Nino-driven weather continues Spring will be warmer than normal. The water is normally warm and good for swimming in June. The Gathering will be held inside the mouth of Bass River in a protected bay. There are a wide array of paddling areas within the river but the ocean is readily available. The main viewing and testing area will remain protected no matter what the weather conditions. DIRECTIONS You are on your own to get to Cape Cod. Once you cross over the Sagamore Bridge on Route 6 head out on the Cape. Get off at Exit 8 (Union Street) Turn right (south) and proceed 2 miles to Route 28 (third stop light). Turn left (east) on Route 28. Cross over Bass River Bridge proceed into the town of West Dennis. Turn right onto School Street (at the gas station). About 1 mile on your right you will see a salt marsh. Turn next right on Lighthouse Road. Half mile there will be a small rotary. Follow onto beach road, going along the beach with ocean to the left. Go all the way to the end. There is plenty of parking. There is no registration or parking fee for this event. A small donation would be helpful to defray setup costs but it is entirely voluntary.
