What is the survival value of dental floss?

It just happens to be one of the strongest, most compact ways of
having lots of line to make/repair things in a survival situation.
To survive for a short time you need fresh water and shelter. Your
kit should includes means of obtaining both for the area you paddle
in.
Like other rescue skills - survival skills need practice so put your
own kit together and try it out. A knowledge of traditional methods
and materials used by the first peoples in your area will often help
guide your choices. High tech stuff can and does fail (I'm not giving
up the VHF radio) and any gear is not a use unless it is with you.
The concept of a small light survival kit is that you wear it so you
have it if you and your boat get separated! As I mentioned before I
keep a larger emergency/bail-out bag of gear in my boat but that does
not preclude the need for wearing a small kit.

Try lashing twine instead. Readily available at marine stores, like Western
Marine, and quite cheap. It is stronger than dental floss, and comes in two
weights and your choice of blue or white.
