Having played the game of trying to climb back into my kayak without
a paddle float, I can say that you would be much less stable lying on
the afterdeck than  sitting in the cockpit and would find it much
harder to brace when the next wave came along. Also, you would be much
wetter, with a greater likelihood of hypothermia setting in.
