Dear Clyde:

I posted nearly 500 safety items to rec.boats.paddle in 5 months,
establishing a Guiness record for the category. That newsgroup had an
average 15-20% post focus on safety, for the duration. To get a sense of
my foray into RBP: use Infoseek to search "sea kayak safety", choose
"usenet newsgroups" when you type "sea kayak safety", click on SEEK. My
first 40 posts and others, for comparison, are interesting regarding
"common sense." (See web later for "sponsons revisited" on p.1,
"Take me to the Top..."--"sea kayak safety"--Infoseek). Take care, Tim.

So as you will note in my posts, I favour devices over the skills, which
can easily disappear under unforeseen weather changes, illness or injury
to oneself or a group member. Thanks, Tim

Dear Clyde: Too bad John Winters and others require me to protect the public.
He actually thinks the roll is reliable public safety. He doesn't realize
that the paddlefloat was invented due to roll unreliability. Unfortunately
the paddlefloat leaves one without a paddle in the same capsizing conditions.
The roll leaves one with a paddle in the same capsizing conditions, with no
more stability and possibly a dislocated shoulder. Small wonder it is not
reliable for 97%. "So few sea kayakers are able to perfom the roll...most
just fall out of the boat." Kayak Touring'97, p.53. It's Too bad about John
Winters and the others. The facts are so simple. Thanks, Tim

Dear Folk: Sponsons are a fat boat, to paddle to safety at 80% normal speed
with re-capsize protection. See InfoSeek, "sea kayak safety", SEEK-- "Take
Me To The Top...," (p.1) This web page has "sponsons revisited", an emergency
Lake Superior surf landing by an intermediate paddler. This one reason why
they are superior to rolls and pf. Add a Seafloat and even more safety. It's
obvious. Thanks, Tim

Dear John: Get used to this reality, "...most just fall out of the boat..
(Kayak Touring'97,p.53)

This prejudice against uniform public safety goes down well in these
discussion groups. But civil and coroner juries are not biased toward rolls
etc. In fact sea kayaking is so small a sport, the issue will be how
diligent the industry is regarding safety or how negligent. Your rolls and
paddlefloats don't have much support from most of the major authors.
Sponsons and seafloats do. It is rather obvious to a jury, and few of you
are so foolish to openly condemn such obvious solutions to reliable sea
kayak safety. Thanks, Tim

It would appear that the cultists will continue to confuse the public about
their risks as well as their safety options. Of course the Sea Kayaker
article has not been mentioned. Sponsons are dangerous, compared to the
roll, according to the party line.

Dear Clyde: I have an enormous volume of safety comments compiled over
5 years, not even to mention the nearly 500 posts to rec.boats.paddle
(and some very crazy responses to my posts). Type "sea kayak safety" when
you click on InfoSeek "usenet newsgroups". Many sea kayakers have
benefitted from this information, which their instruction left out. Most
couldn't roll (tried a lot, cockpits too large, "just fall out".)
Left the paddlefloat home: "what good would it do me anyway?"

Very patiently yours,

Tim
