[Paddlewise] Mariner Max & XL

Has anyone paddled both the Max and the XL? I am thinking of getting one of
these for fishing and for camping volume. They both fit me perfectly and I
like the way the Mariner boats handle. (My current boats are 22" beam with
almost but not quite enough volume or primary stability for these purposes.)
. I also intend to put a rudder on. Any opinions on the rudder that
Mariner uses? It seems to me that the XL would be more suited to a rudder
than the Max because it doesn't have the integral skeg.

The XL is not an old design but seems better to me because I prefer stiffer
tracking to easy turning.

The Brozes recommend against Kevlar or other lighter layups. Does anyone
have experience with a lighter layup in a Mariner boat?

Thanks,
Jerry
