     That's interesting, Chuck.  Didn't realize that ICOM's M1 was 
     compliant with the JIS-7 "submersible" standards.  Had thought it was 
     just "waterproof" to the whatever-USCG standard.  Defender Marine 
     <www.defenderUS.com> has the M1 for $242.95 --- and the M1+ with the 
     bigger battery for $259.95 --- and does not charge sales tax on 
     out-of-state orders --- which we, the buyers, will take care of 
     seperately with our respective state agencies, of course.
     
     Your observations are the same as ones I sent to Fred off-list; any of 
     the "submersible" and the "waterproof" VHFs are likely to have the 
     stuff he wants --- weather alert, scan features, etc.  And, at 
     $264.90, the "submersible" Apelco 520 still looks good, too.

"extensive" thread.  I'm a relatively new subscriber and was not aware of 
paddlewise faq.  Maybe I should have done a Dejanews search first.
     
I have one of those big 1/5 W that I purchased for $100.  It requires   bagging 
and doesn't have weather alert.  I want something smaller, submersible   for 
emergency contact, monitoring traffic, and getting weather reports.  I'm 
currently not interested in chatting.  In all likelyhood, I'll be getting   a 
nice ICOM or Alpeco. I just was thinking . . .really . . .that the   handheld 
vendors are catering to a market other than a "handfull" of kayakers.    The 
extended altitude/range of the larger vessels may make good use of the   extra 
7dB of power but sitting below water surface (or swimming) may obviate   the 
need
for more power.

I think any of the true submersibles is likely to have the features you 
want. Since they tend to be higher priced in any event, the submersibles 
also tend to be full-featured. I have an Icom IC-M1, which has the 
weather alert you want, is fully submersible, and is one of the smallest 
of the VHF marine radios. West Marine at  
http://www.iwol.com/iww/customers/westmarine/ has it priced at $260, but 
I got mine on sale at Boat/US for $20 less. For $20 more, however, you 
can get it with a larger battery (the IC-M1+).
     
FWIW, Bill Newman carried a bare Icom IC-M1 in his PFD pocket during his 
160-mile crossing of Lake Superior with Don Dimond and had no problems
with it. This was after returning several other radios to Boat/US because   
they failed. Bill doesn't like to operate a radio through a bag.
