Screwing the antenna firmly onto the radio apparently helps keep water away from the connection, but whether this helps to waterproof the electronics or merely helps to preserve the electrical characteristics of the antenna, I don't know. I suspect the latter. About the IC-M1+, I don't know. (It would depend on the size of your pocket in any case.)
