Re:  the type of craft -- I think your description fits what we call out
here a "McKenzie river boat," after the river in Oregon of the same
name, I believe.  Used extensively by steelhead fishers, both
individuals and guides, for drifting steelhead rivers/streams.  Guided
by oars.
