Internship Positions Available At Southeast Alaskan Wilderness Retreat A 5-star wilderness lodge located in the heart of Southeast Alaska’s Misty Fjords National Monument Wilderness is seeking to fill various guest services internships for the lodge’s 1998/1999 operating seasons. The lodge has recently been acquired by new owners who are transitioning the facility to become the first Southeast Alaskan wilderness eco-tourism and environmental interpretative center dedicated exclusively to supporting environmentally sustainable conservation programs. This world-class facility will be a focus for scientific marine research and environmental education programs unlike any others offered in the Northwest. The 1998/1999 internships available at the lodge are part of an exploratory program being conducted to facilitate the delivery of a new type of ecological curriculum. Guests of this lodge will be offered programs designed to be self-sustaining and educational, i.e., wilderness sea kayaking tours, wildlife and nature photography expeditions, bird and wildlife scouting, low impact hiking and marine exploration tours, combined with progressive environmental education programs. The objective of the programming offered by the lodge is to provide visitors a high-caliber experience that will enhance their desire and ability to become effective advocates of wilderness ecosystems and wildlands preservation. All proceeds from the operation of the Lodge are redirected to supporting conservation and environmental preservation. There is no payment offered for these services, but all room and board is provided. In most cases, interns will spend 5 days per week providing excellent client services, while having two days weekly to enjoy their own time exploring and enjoying the Misty Fjords wilderness. In some instances, gratuities may be provided to interns by our guests. At the end of their internship, interns will be offered an assessment that may be used as credit toward specific courses of study. If the intern is attempting to fulfill certain educational objectives or course credit for a specific program or curriculum, we will attempt to work with the appropriate educational establishment to help that intern achieve their requisite credits. Sea Kayaking Guide Assistant/Intern: The sea kayaking intern will help to provide a comprehensive kayaking curriculum to guests of the lodge. Guests will be using tandem sea kayaks, but the intern will be traveling in a single kayak. The intern will be responsible for assisting with kayaking and safety instruction, maintenance and repair of kayaks and equipment, accompanying kayak tours and providing food preparation, natural interpretation and rescue/first aid services where required. This is not an entry level internship, and candidates must show proficiency in wilderness first aid, emergency medical technician or related medical training, in association with advanced level kayaking skills. Candidates will be tested for their ability to perform field rescue and retrieval techniques. Advanced paddling experience is mandatory for this position; candidates can select to use their own equipment, provided these boats meet our standards of safety and are insured by the intern. The ideal candidate will have served in a guiding position previously, or is an advanced level kayaker who is capable of meeting the above criteria. Room and board is provided, and the kayaking intern’s schedule will be dependent on the kayaking and tour desires of our guests. Nature Photography Assistant/Intern (seasonal May-September, 2 positions available): The nature photography intern will assist the program manager to implement and offer high-quality nature photography workshops in-the-field. Responsibilities will include researching and co-leading field trips, assisting with minor camera repairs and basic instruction, transporting and delivering field equipment, interpreting wildlife signs and identifying flora/fauna and offering on-site photography assistant services. The intern will also be involved in post-workshop critique delivery and some level of formal classroom technique/instruction. Advanced knowledge of field photographic techniques and principles is mandatory. Candidates will be asked to provide evidence of their knowledge, and formal training in photographic arts is desired but not necessary. Intern must be personally outfitted with the suitable photographic equipment and have current insurance coverage on all equipment. Basic knowledge of wildlife is mandatory; advanced knowledge of wildlife species and southeast Alaska region is desired. Room and board is provided, and the photography intern’s schedule will be determined by the workshop needs of our guests. Candidates presently involved in academic training or who are enrolled in a photographic field of study are encouraged to apply. Efforts will be made to arrange for course credit if applicable.
