At the risk of blaspheming, I want to survey the list on the subject of
kayak sailing. I have been monitoring the list for some time and rarely
see the word "sail" so I have avoided mentioning the "S" word until I
saw someone else post it today. Just for my own curiosity, how many of
you dedicated kayakers or canoeists will admit to sailing their HPV's.
Thanks for your assistance and for the interesting list.

Mark

Have used the Folbot (used to be Balogh?) Twins rig on my Greenland II a
couple of times. Fun, but strictly downwind. Traveled in the Esperanza
Inlet/Tahsis Inlet system last summer with two other G II's similarly
equipped -- solo paddlers made sailing really handy. The fourth yak, a
hardshell, had one of Mark's higher-tech arrangements, with outriggers
and a "sailboard" type sail. That one really hauled butt!

Because of headwind effect, both the G II's were tough for a single
paddler to push upwind, but the hardshell, with a smoother, lower
profile to reduce the effects of wind exposure, could be pushed upwind
more easily (also had two paddlers). (All these upwind paddling
comments, of course, apply to rigs with sails down.)

You wouldn't be the BOSS, would you? We used the Balogh BOSS sails on
Skookumchuk doubles on Lake Superior a while back. Nice trip, even in the
mild winds we had. If the winds had been up, those things would have
really flown. I've been plotting to ad a sail to some boat or another
since, but haven't yet.

Hello, again, Mark!

I grab a "free" ride on my folding "super" every chance I get. I use only
a down wind sail or a parfoil kite now, but as soon as the piggy bank is
full enough.... I plan on having one of those batwing rigs you make on
it!!
During the winter months I'll paddle per usual, but during the summer
time, that sure looks like the way to go on the area lakes.

James

I have sailed an aerius II using one of your fine sails on a number
of occassions and a hardshell seascape II as well. I occasionally sail a
FG single using a kayak spinnacker from windspeed designs - also a very
fine sail.

We have started sailing our kayaks with umbrellas!!!!! It was almost
impossible to find a clear vinyl (see-through) one, but Walmart finally came
through with a Betty-Boop umbrella. Don't laugh till you have tried it. The
size is perfect. The handle fits under the front bungie cords, and the ribs
fit neatly across the deck. We got into such a breeze last weekend that the
umbrellas blew out. I fixed that with spiderwire from the tip of each rib back
through a hole drilled in the umbrella shaft near the handle. It will take a
monsoon to reverse the ribs now. Can't wait to try it out this weekend.

Why not dental floss?

Spiderwire is much thinner and still holds a knot. It is also exceptionally
strong. You can find it in the fishing line area of most sporting goods
departments. I know Walmart carries it.Richard Fawcett
