So very true.
However in order to be of some help to those, who like all of us ,did
have to start some where,I suggest that we might share some of our
experiences and escapes in a form which gives the newby a chance to
think about the situation discribed.
To make it easier for me I will start with an example of what I have in
mind and like to ask the *regular experts*;) to hold their answers for a
few days.
scenario:
Having paddled with a group or club we know how it goes ,we have a
leader and a pre trip talk.We always discuss that the group must keep
together, and we select a "Buddy" to pair up with etc.
than more often than not, one club member disappears out of sight for
quite some time befor he turns up again........
question: What effect do you think his disappearance has on the group?
What effect can his disappearance have on one or more
individuals in the group?
  Kia Ora
Eddie.
