There's all sorts of reasons for having a spare. Loss or breakage seems to top the list. But a spare might be an option for changing conditions, coming in through the surf or high wind verses open water paddling. Mostly I see them fixed to the rear deck where they're accessible from the cockpit. I've seen one and two-piece paddles on the foredeck too. Dave Kruger has been known to set the two piece paddles inside the cockpit in front of the seat. And I've heard of two-piece paddles being jammed along the sides of the seat and running along the shear line inside the cockpit. If your main paddle gets loose from you, the spare can give you the power to chase it. That's a nice option when some paddles are running $200 plus. Twice,to safe an unfortunate member of our party from going home again because they had left their paddle behind.A very good reason to carry one even when paddling with a group... Kia Ora .
