Thanks for the URL info, Mike. These are very good articles on the subject. Chuck, do you remember if the follow-up is online? I'd like to set up links to these. When paddling in New Zealand, I noticed the seals seemed to have no fear of sea kayakers, swimming around and underneath the kayaks, but that was in Abel Tasman, a popular sea kayaking area. My guess is they have become conditioned to sea kayakers. Anyhow, this is good reading material describing what can happen to pup seals when mothers are startled and flee the area.
