It has been mentioned that you can fit the ICOM IC-M1 VHF in a PFD
pocket. Do you have to first remove the antenna? Would that make it no
longer waterproof? And will the model with the larger battery (IC-M1+)
still fit in the PFD pocket?

Frank,

The ICOM M1 has a frontal aspect ratio of ~5"x~2" and it's ~1.25 thick . .
.without antenna. The antenna is about 7" long. It will protrude quite nicely
through the top corners, but may intrude on your face, etc. The antenna would
be on the right side unless you point the speaker toward your body, assuming it
would be affixed on the front torso. You would need to evaluate your PFD
pockets for impact/fitting. Given the relative costs, maybe the radio should
drive the PFD purchase.

BTW, I purchased an Icom M1, it seems to do well attached to my Lotus Lola
(Lo-Lo-La-Lola) lower D-ring. This is a very nerdy look though. I must get a
long pointy bladed diver's knife with serrated back edge (or even better a
double edged blade) to attach to my PFD (Lo-Lo-La-Lola). This may balance the
VHF techno with the Rambo primal and maybe no one will notice I'm wearing a
female PFD. Better yet, it won't matter.

Thanks for he input people. I'll be experiencing buyer's remorse for a while,
probably.
I still have a strong suspicion that 1W will transmit to a kayaker's range as
well as 5W. Now if I can swim to a weather buoy and climb to the top . . .

Fred

Tell us more!!! no wait a minute I know this is a family e-mail list so
maybe you had better not elaborate on why you wear a FEMALE PFD. We will
just come to our own conclusions or better yet maybe Dr. Peregrine
Inverbon, Ph.d., DD, LL.d, Ph.g can enlighten us on this need of yours.

Lotus designed the Lola to be more ergonomic for the female anatomy. As it
turns out, many have found the Lola to be more ergonomic, regardless of the
user's gender. Basically, it has three panels in the front rather than the two
panels of their other designs, allowing more freedom. I s'pose it's not quite
as flexible as say the Extrasport Rouge with multiple tubes, but I've found that
type to typically be too bulky under my arms. I most often use a low paddling
technique with my arms at my sides. The good doctor may have input on
suppressed tendencies, though.
