Bob and Jerry; I don't know if these ideas will help you with your re-enter and roll or not, but they are things I specifically addressed myself back when I taught myself to re-enter and roll. Thigh and hip bracing are more critical when you are doing a roll with a boat full of water. The boat moves slower and you can actually torque yourself right out of the boat (or at least out of position) during the roll. A big part of making the roll work is knowing what to do with your paddle. I have often seen people wrestle with their paddle while also trying to get into their boat only to have one get in the way of the other and, eventually, cutting down on set-up time, they rush and miss the roll. If you are not already doing it, hold the paddle and the boat with the same hand, ie. if you are getting in from the right side, hold the paddle in your left hand and also hold onto the left side of the cockpit with the same hand. This will enable you to securely hold the paddle out of the way while also holding the boat in the proper position (for side entry) and the paddle will, in turn, be in the perfect position for set-up once you are securely in the boat. Because this position is so easy and repeatable it will flow very smoothly into your set-up and roll. Doing what I mentioned above, you should still have plenty of time to be able to relax, make certain you are fully seated and secured and then still be able to pay attention to proper set-up and the rest of the details of the roll to make it go smoothly. I hope this is of some help.
