The ferry that leaves from near the US border (Tsawwassen) no longer goes to downtown Nanaimo (which had an easy to walk to launch) instead it goes to Duke Point (about 10 miles by road from the old launch point). I paddled by the new dock before it opened last year and noticed that the banks are very steep boulders and concrete. I also know that the bay on the opposite side of the peninsula (about 1 mile by paddle or maybe 100 yards for a bird to fly) is shallow and the shores appear gently sloped. My question is: Does anyone know if there is a reasonable launch point near the Duke Point ferry dock? If so, how far of a walk? and how steep are the banks? If their is no put in nearby, is there a shuttle service? If so, what is the cost per boat? I am planning on doing this trip in a few weeks and would appreciate any information someone may have.
