I've modified my 35litre Sealine Taper by gluing an inflation tube cut from
a worn-out white water float bag into the wide end. I pack the bag, bleed
out the air with the vent, jam it into the stern, and blow the bag back up
as floatation in case of a hatch leak. Next to it, I put my deluxe
Therm-a-rest, which I've fit into the custom dry bag (the same company
makes Therm-a-Rests and Sealline dry bags). Once its in its dry bag, I open
the Therm-a-Rest valve to let it fill with air, then close the valve again,
so it's floatation too, even if the dry bag leaks.
My kayak has a VCP leakproof "Tupperware" front hatch, but if it didn't I'd
do something similar in the bow to avoid a Cleopatra's Needle in case of
flooding.
