[Paddlewise] "Pythagoras"

        It's spelled Pythagoras. The guy's a Greek (or was a Greek). 

        I find it ironic that the airlines can't just realize that a seven
foot paddle when stored diagonally will fit into the max dimensions posted.
That would leave lots of space open for stowing other things on the plane
--like boxes of right triangles or maybe three cornered hats. 

        This "puzzle" has been floating around for years. I first read about
it in "Boy's Life"  the magazine for Boy Scouts, probably about 1960. Then
the problem was shipping a rifle. But you can't generally ship rifles these
days.
