Subject: [Paddlewise] New British sea kayak Maga

A while back I mentioned a new British Sea kayak Magazine called Ocean
Paddler. Here is the web site. Not a lot on it yet but at least it says
where to get copies from. I have not seen the mag so have no idea what its
like!

I have a copy of the premiere issue, and I am sorry to say that it looks very amateurish. It has lots of typos, grammatical errors, and punctuation errors. The sans serif font used for body text is hard to read. Layout is poor: there are a couple of photos on the page preceding the first page of Stan Chladek's article that I can tell belong with it only because Stan is in one and there is a beaver lodge in the other. The photos do not have captions. Under the heading about the Midwest Mountaineering Canoe Event in Minnesota (where I got my copy), there is a story about a similar event put on, I think, by the Jersey Paddler.

Articles vary in quality. There is an interesting article on the history of kayak
design in Great Britain that frustratingly stops short of Frank Goodman's designs. Goodman himself has a question-and-answer column that has potential. There is a one-page declaration about the Nordkapp Trust that cries out for amplification. There is an article about tides and another about VHF radios that I have not finished yet, but which is rather dense.

I wish the editor and publisher luck, but right now Ocean Paddler is a long way from competing with Sea Kayaker. Unfortunately, the thing about it that I like best is that the next time my English-born wife twits me about the superiority of an English education, all I need to do is show her Ocean Paddler.

Great River Outfitters is the distributor in North America:
