I just got wind of a ceremony to take place in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of the creation of Greater New York, i.e. unification of all five boros. It is a blessing of boats to take place between Piers 34 and 40 on the Hudson. That is just immediately north of the Downtown Boathouse. I haven't much details but this and other water activities are in the works. The date is on June 20th starting at 4 pm (again Piers 34 to 40, roughly Canal to West Houston Streets). This is just after the flood current starts. At its max it will be a strong current because the moon is in its perigee (on the 20th) and pretty close to a new moon (June 23rd). So it may be a struggle to paddle back down if you paddle up from the Downtown Boathouse and get started late. The organizers are trying to get a lot of ships to show up and do announce they want canoes and kayaks too. All major denominations will be there to bless the vessels. I don't know if one has a choice but it wouldn't hurt to go for as many blessings as one can. You never know when you might need everyone of them. :-) Add a St. Christopher medal and a waterproofed religious card of Nuestra Senora de La Caridad del Cobre (Cuba's patron saint that involved divine intervention in tempestuous seas to save three guys in a canoa or canoe in the 1500s) and you'll be all set for anything. Craig, do you think we should plan something via the Hudson River Watertrail Association? best, ralph diaz p.s. I cced some other listservers in case someone might be in town and is not on nyckayaker *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.gasp-seakayak.net/paddlewise/ ***************************************************************************
