Philip > and to have gone > out and purchased my own copy of 'SEA-KAYAKER' DEEP TROUBLE Notice the number of incidents where the person didn't have a PFD or was sitting on it at the time? Also the number of incidents where there weren't bulkheads or proper flotation? Incidently. I believe Derek Hutchinson often doesn't wear a PFD (when instructing too!!!!!) and the original Baidarka he designed only had one bulkhead. At least I knew the first sea kayak I built had to have 2 or else. Sometime the "experts" can get away with it but it's not the way for us mere mortals. I recall a famous photo of him in his kayak at the demo beach for the LL Bean Sea Kayak Symposium in which Derek is back paddling away from a Bean person who is wading out and waving a PFD for him to put on (or maybe Derek was trying to swat the guy with his paddle, nothing like making a tall tale out a true story :-)). Symposiums require you wear one on demo beaches and for instruction. Derek is no fool and will accomodate himself to local native customs. So he wears a PFD, makes wider boats of a type he used to roundly criticize, etc. It is known as marketing. ralph diaz -- ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Ralph Diaz . . .
