Here's my situation: Because of the mild winter here in Maryland (ie, no snow days), school is getting out a week early (June 5). Summer camp for my son, who is 11, doesn't start until June 15. I have some vacation time I need to use, so we're considering heading up to Maine for that week in between school and camp. I've never been to Maine, so I need some advice. I'm looking for a place to car camp along the coast of Maine with a spot to launch our kayaks and lots of interesting islands and/or coastline to explore nearby. My son is a pretty good paddler (he has a better off-side roll than I do), but we're not looking to do anything particularlly adventerous or challenging. So, we want the water to be fairly protected. Any advice on campgrounds that meet these criteria would be greatly appreciated. Also, I know early June is black fly season, what's the black fly situation along the Maine coast? I spoke to a lady with the MITA and she recommended Hermit Island campground near Bath. I called them and they're sending me a brochure. Has anyone on the list ever camped there?
