Read all about it at: http://www.winters.demon.co.uk/bcu.htm Hank Hays ************************************************************************** * The BCU is more than a sea kayaking organization; it is the governing board for all canoeing activities in the U.K., including whitewater, kayak surfing, "Canadian" canoeing, canoe sailing, and competitive canoeing and kayaking such as for the Olympics. The official BCU Web site is at http://www.bcu.org.uk/. Because of the quality of its instruction program (programme), many North American instructors have chosen to be certified by the BCU. (For insurance purposes -- the BCU does not have a North American insurance program -- and other reasons, most North American instructors are also certified by the ACA.) Frank Goodman, Nigel Dennis, Stan Chladek, and others have set up a separate organization, called the Nordkapp Trust, to export the BCU sea kayaking program to other parts of the world, including the U.S.A. For more information on the Nordkapp Trust, see http://members.aol.com/kayaktours/. The BCU Star program is a graded award system that certifies kayaking proficiency. The Four Star proficiency award is the lowest one that applies to sea kayaking. Basically, it means that you are competent to travel on the sea in a group led by a competent leader.
