The ferry that leaves from near the US border (Tsawwassen) no longer goes to downtown Nanaimo (which had an easy to walk to launch) instead it goes to Duke Point (about 10 miles by road from the old launch point). I paddled by the new dock before it opened last year and noticed that the banks are very steep boulders and concrete. I also know that the bay on the opposite side of the peninsula (about 1 mile by paddle or maybe 100 yards for a bird to fly) is shallow and the shores appear gently sloped. My question is: Does anyone know if there is a reasonable launch point near the Duke Point ferry dock? If so, how far of a walk? and how steep are the banks? If their is no put in nearby, is there a shuttle service? If so, what is the cost per boat? I am planning on doing this trip in a few weeks and would appreciate any information someone may have. Does anyone have any information about a causeway or series of island hopping bridge system being built with private venture capital (to operate by toll) from Duke Point to the mainland near or at Vancouver? I heard from some while passing through Naniamo last summer. I would very much appreciate knowing more if anyone has any information. > I don't know much about the Duke Point area, but, if your destination is the Gulf Islands, why not just take one of the other ferries from Tsawwassen that travels directly to the Gulf Islands? I think Saltspring at least is serviced this way from Tsawwassen. BC ferry website has the info at http://www.bcferries.bc.ca. >Date: Sat, 9 May 1998 13:04:55 -0700 >From: saul_at_isomedia.com (Saul Kinderis) >Subject: [Paddlewise] Canadian Gulf Islands - put in near Duke Point? > ...snip... >I am planning on doing this trip in a few weeks and would appreciate any >information someone may have. > >Thanks - Saul > *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.gasp-seakayak.net/paddlewise/ ***************************************************************************
