That's part of the beauty of it --- the fan keeps the air moving through the the housing, cooling the housing and the fire chamber, while the now-heated air is used to optimize combustion of the fuel. The exterior is hot to the touch when it's ripping, but I think it might even be handleable --- although I've never tried.
