Actually the sun compass is a real item.
You must know the time to use it.

When in the Arctic or Antarctic circle, in summer, the Sun tracks around
the horizon and by knowing what time it is, you know which direction it
is to the Sun.

A gyro compass is easier if you are on a ship, but hard to carry on foot
or in a kayak.
