Everybody seems to suggest that you can use the sun for a compass,
but no one says how it's done. Here's how you do it. (from Boy Scouts of
America)

With an analog watch (the one with the hands), point the hour hand
at the sun. Divide the space between the hour hand and 12:00 (the shortest
disance). Midpoint is due south. (e.g. At 2:00 PM, due south is at 1:00 PM.)
Each minute on the dial equals 6 degrees. Adjust your reading for daylight
time.

        Geolocationally, Geo.
