Step was made from a a piece of brass tube mounted in a knee tube fabricated from GRP, the knee tube providing support for the deck/step. I have a mark #1 experimental sail made from a piece of old nylon fly sheet material, two bamboo canes, a shower curtain rail, piece of dowel, and some duck tape. The step went through a few prototypes but the sail was extremely quick/cheap to make! Unfortunately I'm in the process of moving house, and haven't had time to try it on the water yet. But should get out for a paddle locally on Wednesday evening, and on Friday (five days and counting), I'm off to Achnahaird and the Summer Isles (58º1'N 5º24'W - west coast of Scotland, 40 miles north of Skye, yeeeeha!) so initial sea trials will hopefully take place soon. I suspect that this first sail may be a wee bit too big, but If I like it then I have some ripstop nylon and some carbon kite spars with which to make (stitch, not duck tape :-) a more permanent sail. Peter Carter posted some very useful advice about these types of sails to Wave~length, and if I remember correctly Andrew Eddy posted some excellent comments about his experiences with home made sails to Paddlewise. If anyone is interested in these posts I'll have them archived somewhere.
