I think Tom asked mentioned about keeping groups small and also the problems of splitting groups as the beter paddlers can leave the less experienced behind. In our case things were a bit different: Yes I really do prefer small groups but in this case we had a high ratio of local paddlers present and some of our experienced paddlers were in the 'slower group' that day. In fact given the way the group fell into roughly half and there were two experienced leaders in each group plu at least another local paddler who knew the route it was ok. But like any situation when you are taking unkown people its a bit more stressful than when you are with your pals.
