Just finished reading this very good book. Anyone out there know
whatever happened to George Dyson and his baidarka? He's not
lurking on this list, is he?

As far as I know, George is alive and well, still building baidarkas in
Bellingham, Washington. He has an ad in the back of Sea Kayaker magizine.
Friends of mine have stopped by his shop to visit and chat with George.
Also, a great companion book to The Starship and the Canoe is a large
paperbound book by Dyson called, I think, Baidarka. It is all about George and
his kayaks and his paddling adventures. It is full of great color pictures of
all the boats described in The Starship and the Canoe. You'll get to see his
tree house & that big kayak "Mt. Fairweather".

In addition to what Ken has mentioned George Dyson has
just published another book (which appears to be getting
rave reviews). The title of his latest book is:

DARWIN AMONG THE MACHINES;
                           OR, THE ORIGINS OF
                           [ARTIFICIAL] LIFE
                           A Presentation By George Dyson

"This new book of his is about the evolution of mind and computers
that derives both its title and outlook from Samuel Butler's
1863 essay "Darwin Among the Machines." Observing the
 beginnings of miniaturization, self-reproduction, and
 telecommunication among machines."

George's book Baidarka is infecteous as it will trigger the
desire to build your own baidarka so be careful reading it.
I am in process of building four.

Best Regards,

Philip Wylie

He's up in Bellingham (upper left corner of upper left state), last I heard,
and is known to lurk on Wavelength.
