[Paddlewise] Desperately seeking mangroves

I posted this question to GASP, got one response from a really nice person
with suggestions for trips but no mangroves, and one recommendation to send
it to PW, so here 'tis.

I'm planning my "non-family" or solo vacation for the summer, and have been
searching guidebooks and maps, trying to find the nearest coastal mangrove
swamp. From here in Americus, GA, I can get to the Gulf--Alligator Point
s. of Tallahassee--in about three and a half or four hours. I want to find
a location for several day or an overnight paddle that includes a chance to
find some mangrove habitat.

I've found out that Cedar Key has no any mangrove swamp, so what's the
closest? I hope I don't have to go as far south as Tampa, but I
will...might wait til September, though.

Thanks in advance,

Wynne
Americus, GA
USA

I usually take this vacation solo or with one or two other people. We've
been going to the Carolina coast or blackwater rivers for several years,
now I'm trying to get them to come south to the Gulf coast.
