Arctic Canada
Haven't been to Ellesmere Island, but I have paddled around Coppermine in
the Eastern Arctic, and Tuktoyuktuk (spelling?) in the Western Arctic. Have
to say I liked the geography of the Eastern Arctic better - massive granite
headlands, miles and miles of miles and miles, vast swathes of granite.
(Reminded me of the Lofoten Islands in Norway's Arctic, where I've also
paddled.) On the other hand, I had more chance to meet the people in and
around Tuk. They were great. It did feel a bit strange for me, as a white,
to be introducing Inuit children to kayaks - they knew what they were, but
none of them had ever paddled one. (The hunters now use Lund aluminum boats
and outboard motors).
Anyway, if anyone gets the chance, they should visit the North. It's
weirdly, hauntingly desolate, vast and timeless.
