Wow! Physics and everything. Might as well add to the equations. Tom's law of lightweight paddles; A lightweight paddle uses less energy to move around. Tom's law of paddle angle: A 90 degree paddle is great on a windy day but will give Tom cysts on the wrists! I think some dude named Newton said (before he started show biz in Vegas): A kayak in motion will remain in motion until acted upon by an unbalanced force. Then there are other details like the amount of motion is directly related to the amount of force blah blah blah. Tom's translation: The more efficient you are in combination of self and paddle, the more you move per amount of effort. Example: take the table tennis paddles and use them on your next trip. Early Greenland bar hopper kayakers discovered that they could carry less gear if they combined uses of kayak paddles and table tennis paddles. They thought this was efficient. Well, some smartass Greenlander decided to break tradition and use a rubber covering on his table tennis paddle. In early times the glue he used to secure the rubber to the paddle was water based. He ended up carrying his tennis paddle in a drybag and substituting a svelt stick for his kayak paddle. Well all the history books say that he ended up getting to the bars earlier, drinking more and winning at table tennis. In addition, when he got home he wasn't sore. Not long after, all his bar fly friends decided to follow the winning formula. Sooo here we have it, the history of the Greenland paddle and its evolution. Where is this all going? There is a difference in equipment. You don't need to dwell on it. Someone will come up with a winning combination....just copy them.
