I accidently deleted the message where someone asked about wing-style technique with the Greenland paddle. It's a good idea to Cc: messages to my personal account (kwhilden_at_u.washington.edu), since I sometimes go through weeks of not carefully reading messages on Paddlewise. Start like this... 1. Extend arms straight ahead and lock elbows. 2. Plant the paddle deep nto the water, with the paddle shaft nearly vertical. 3. Slice the paddle sideways and outwards to approach a horizontal paddle shaft angle. This is the key part, where the torso twisting provides all of the power in the stroke. Lateral (outward) motion of the end of the paddle is very important, he faster the better. At the end of the stroke, the paddle shaft should be approaching parallel with the centerline of the boat. 4. Repeat. Once you've got the idea, you can experiment with a less vertical paddle entry, which is really not necessary for our puporses, and with bending your arms, which is more comfortable and increases the power available. Let me know if this helps! For the record, I did try the wing paddle stroke with a Greenland paddle, and it works fine. However, doing the motion which puts the paddle almost vertical to the water I missed the feather of the paddle, which would make such stroke a lot more comfortable. By the way, the ACA instructor exam requires the candidate to demonstrate a perfect technique with that stroke and others, so it is a good idea to grab a euro paddle and practice it once in a while. - Julio > > I accidently deleted the message where someone asked about wing-style > technique with the Greenland paddle.
