I read about a liquid that one covers a kayak with to prevent
deterioration from UV rays and the elements in general. Is this
necessary?

Also, I'm trying to find information on the Chesapeake Paddlers
Association. I found a couple of web pages but they don't look like
they've been updated in a while. I'm looking for membership
information, club schedule, dues information, etc.

I'd appreciate any help.

Thanks, Donna

The CPA webpages haven't been updated in a while - other priorities have
intruded on the person maintaining the page, but generally, the schedule,
newsletters, etc are just slightly out of date. Membership information on
the web page is correct (http://www.abs.net/~gregh/kayaking/), and the
membership is still $10 per year. Further information:

THE CHESAPEAKE PADDLERS ASSOCIATION
Sea Kayaking in the Chesapeake Bay Area

WHO ARE WE?

The Chesapeake Paddlers Association is an informal network of paddlers who
enjoy the sport of sea kayaking. Our interests are as diverse as our 300+
members. For some, the lure of sea kayaking is the opportunity to
experience the natural beauty of the Chesapeake Bay. For others, it is an
opportunity to explore the hundreds of miles of river, bay, and ocean
coastline which lie within Maryland, Virginia, and Delaware.

Most of our members are novices, with a large number of intermediate
paddlers and a small, growing group of advanced paddlers. Regardless of
your skill level, you will find others to share in your kayaking interests.
We even have kayakers from other regions who participate when possible in
our trips and share experiences from their local paddling.

WHAT DO WE DO?

The Chesapeake Paddlers Association provides a way for those interested in
sea kayaking to meet, socialize and paddle together. During the spring,
summer and fall months we produce a monthly newsletter which provides
information on our activities.

Many of these activities are day trips on different areas of the bay. The
trips are geared toward the different experience levels of the members.
Other activities include weekend campouts, free safety and instructional
clinics, weekly evening trips, and kayak support at charity swims, such as
the annual Bay Bridge swim.

There's good stuff called "303" --- buy a little spray bottle and wait for the
big refill jars to go on sale. Otherwise, pricey.

For the CPA, e-mail Greg Welker at <gwelker_at_erols.com> and he'll sign you up.

sorry, can't help on this one.

Membership is $10/year, you can join by sending your check to CPA, P.O.
Box 341, Greenbelt MD 20766.

There is a monthly newsletter (roughly April-November), various and sundry
paddles, and we all convene in Annapolis on the South River to paddle and
practice rescues and rolls and things and cook out on the dock on
Wednesdays after work. Other folks convene on the Patuxent at Solomons on
Thursdays, and others on the Potomac south of D.C. generally in Virginia
on Tuesdays.

There is also a CPAKayaker listserv which is affiliated with CPA, you can
subscribe by sending "subscribe CPAKayaker" to majordomo_at_lists.shire.net.
It's not quite as prolific as Paddlewise, and a good way to hook up with
local paddlers.

Oh, and I see that Greg Welker has also just replied to your request.
Well, a lot of us are on Paddlewise, so perhaps you'll get more info than
you ever wanted about CPA!
