If I didn't paddle solo, I'd only get to go a few times a year and kayaking wouldn't be worth the effort to me. Yes, I'd rather paddle with a partner or a group, but I don't let the lack of company keep me off the water. I try not to take unnecessary risks, either solo or with others. But I will take <fewer> or less significant risks by myself than if I'm out with a group of more skilled paddlers or even with another paddler of equal or greater skill --- like most of my paddling buddies. For me, that's the difference.
