Does anyone have any comments (with a lead in like this... I can hardly
wait ;-) )for a novice friend of mine who was wondering about learning to
roll a double ocean kayak? Another friend of his had indicated it is really
quite easy to learn/do. Seems to me it might be simplifying it a tad?!

A double roll is done the same as a single. The only difference is that
the person in the stern must watch the peson in the bow for the cue on
when to start the roll. From then on it's the same.

I'd advise against using visual cues -- it's often quite difficult to
see what the other person is doing. For whitewater C-2 rolls, we use
two taps of the paddle against the hull -- so that you can hear *and* feel
it, even in pretty turbulent water. The taps correspond to "1" and "2"
with the roll starting on "3".

And while it might be obvious, it's a good idea to try to roll on the
same side. ;-)

The best --- and only --- double roll I've ever seen attempted was at a Camp
Arrowhead DELMARVA Paddlers' Retreat run, up until recently, by Charlie and
Cindy Cole. Always a great weekend.

Charlie and Cindy were on the program to demo a double roll in a pool for the
particpants' enlightenment --- although we read that to be amusement. It was
both, as it worked out. Charlie, a football coach and pretty clearly one-time
player, who has taught hundreds of people to roll --- the writer included ---
fell out of the double half way through, while Cindy --- all five-not-much-
more feet of her --- in the front position, unaware of Charlie's departure,
rolled the now-water-filled double back up by herself. The look on her face
when she found Charlie missing was worth the price of the weekend.

Yup, it can be done, but it's not likely to always be pretty!
